Lapsang Souchong Tea is a distinctive smoky tea note in perfumery inspired by Lapsang Souchong, a traditionally smoke-processed black tea associated with the Wuyi Mountains of Fujian, China. Its scent is smoky, dry, woody, and deeply aromatic, blending nuances of black tea leaves, pine smoke, charred wood, resin, dry tobacco, leather, and subtle fruity-malty undertones. History & Production: Lapsang Souchong is traditionally associated with Tongmu in the Wuyi Mountain region of Fujian Province, an important historic center of Chinese black-tea production. The tea is made from leaves of Camellia sinensis, which undergo withering, rolling, oxidation, drying, and, in traditionally smoked styles, exposure to pinewood smoke, producing its characteristic combination of black-tea aromatics and pronounced smoky phenolic facets. In perfumery, Lapsang Souchong Tea is usually represented as an olfactory accord rather than a standardized essential oil, although tea extracts and other natural materials may contribute to its construction. Perfumers can recreate the profile using black-tea accords, smoky phenolic materials, pine and resinous facets, guaiac wood, cedarwood, tobacco nuances, leather materials, and dry woody molecules, with subtle fruity or honeyed notes reproducing the complexity beneath the smoke.
